Women’s AHG League / Round 15

Pirates vs Fremantle
Pirates 3 (C. Ciallella 5m, 61m; S. Turner 51m) Def. Fremantle 0
Half time: 1-0

Pirates beat Fremantle 3-0 in a game that could potentially have gone either way after some missed opportunities and spoilt chances. Pirates had the majority of possession but they kept Fremantle in the match with a 1-0 lead at half time.

Chantelle Ciallella secured the first goal of the match for Pirates increasing her lead as the highest goal scorer of the competition. A break away saw Ciallella running into the circle with only the keeper to beat where she dragged right and snuck it between the legs of the keeper.

The play seemed to be stuck on the right side with Pirates half -back Kristie Denning providing the easy transfer and pressure relieving passes out the back.

After 3 unconverted corners from Pirates, Fremantle were starting to look dangerous on the counter through Jordan Holzberger and the speed of Lara Parkin.

The second half began with a corner straight up to Fremantle and what seemed like a refreshed attitude as they pressured Pirates into their defensive third. Fremantle striker, Tisha Morton had a number of opportunities on the back of long balls from the back, including an open goal saved by the post!

Despite the opportunities Fremantle were creating, Kate Denning for Pirates slowed the play in the middle to secure the ball and create options on the outside.

Pirates were able to create a number of chances of their own towards the middle of the second half but goalkeeper Roberta Walton was keeping Fremantle’s hopes alive.  This was until the ball spilled out to Sophie Turner in the circle who put a tomahawk away from the left hand side getting Pirates second goal.

A mere minute later Eloise Crombie found herself in the same position as Turner, but her tomohawk missed wide into the sideboard.

Fremantle had the next best opportunity when Perkin broke away down the left and crossed into a diving Sara Laidler on the post. It was only just saved my Pirates keeper Tandia Wilkinson.

With ten minutes to go the game finished how it started, with a spectacular individual goal by Ciallella, beating 3 players and hammering the ball into the left hand corner of the goal.
