Freo Ladies All Fired Up! - Willow Bridge
Fremantle fielded their strongest team this season on Sunday night against Melville. With Kate Dillon and Emma Smyth (our Irish recruits) settling into the Freo family very nicely, and a full bench on the sidelines, Fremantle was as pumped as ever to get a win over third placed Melville. Emma Smyth was quick off the mark to impress the spectators with her speed, a perfect right drag, then acceleration down the right wing to leave her half back pondering. A quick pass from Jess Laidler to Brenda Golding at the top of the circle, saw the Melville goalie drop to the ground and stay there, as Julia Sisson moved the ball from in front of the goalie, into the net with a cracking hit.
Kate Dillon intimidated her opponent early in the game when she used her body and strength to win the ball on many occasions. Jess Laidler copped an unfortunate knock to the jaw as she went in for a tackle, which stopped the game due to the blood rule. This break in play allowed the teams to regroup and momentarily calm down the physical aggression that was being displayed! Jess came off the field and was attended to by our resident Ambo paramedic Rachel Lamb (Shanks), who did a mighty fine job in patching Jess up - well done mate!! Going into half time 1-0, Fremantle were amped up and there was positive talk all round.
Again, Emma Smyth amazed the players and the crowd with her backstick tomma effort, that stretched the goalie, but unfortunately hit the post and left the crowd saying 'aaahhhhhh'. Melville's physical demeanor continued through the game and was heightened when Julia Sisson ran into the circle with the ball and was taken ass over by the goalie and the ball was apparently stopped on the line by a Melville foot. The umpire apprehensively called a short corner but was over ruled by all the players shouting at her. After the umpires conversed, a stroke was given to Fremantle. Rachel Robertson took the stroke and made the score 2-0 to Freo.
Sara Laidler went for a solo run up the left wing and worked the ball into the circle, where she passed the ball to Jess Laidler, who deflected the ball to the spot off the baseline, and Emma Smyth somehow managed to backstick the ball into goals. Again, the timid umpire was screamed at as Melville thought the ball hit Emma's foot, but the umpire said it hit her stick, then she wasn't sure so she spoke to the other umpire and he said it was her call. The game got very heated as everyone wanted to input their two cents worth of opinions to the umpire's decision!! The umpire threw the ball to the centre line and blew a goal, which really p*s**d Melville off! The umpire's had totally lost control of the game by this stage, but surprisingly, no cards were shown!!
With Melville extremely frustrated by the scoreline and the umpiring, they started hitting the ball long, trying to get possession in their attacking half. Fremantle took this opportunity to work the ball into the circle for one more goal. A short corner was awarded to Gemma Cowan for her persistence in the circle. She capped off her hard work by performing a specky reverse stick flick into goals, and celebrated in style giving high fives to all Freo team mates!
Definitely Fremantle's best team performance this season. Final Score 4-0.

Like a kid in lolly shop was my reaction when the coach called from the sideline said go forward! I thought I was being dragged.
Lets set the scene. PHS 2 Sunday 8pm game( bloody cold) V Wolves the number 2 on the ladder. Score 2-1. Peta's off after coping a hit ( nicely mis-shapen finger). 3 mins to go on the scoreboard. We in defence had coped a hammering from Pam (coach) at half time. Plenty of clear runs for the forwards but we just couldn't find the net again. We were missing 2 of our regular players - Gen & Kylie. Kate running circles around them, Bron getting some fine touches, Kath in her usual form - fast. Taryn looking dangerous, Chloe on the hop.
The girls call me - Pam wants you. She said "go forward" - I gave a squeal of delight, it was a frustrated fullbacks dream, a go up front. Well it all went to the head - I forgot my age & all sense of reason! I demanded the ball took a few steps into the circle hit the ball hard....it lifted shoulder height & into the back of the right side of the net. 2 all, well Celia who doubled up for us leaped into the air, cramp set in which laid her out flat on the turf. We had another few seconds of really looking like we were going to get the game in the bag. A missed short corner let the wind outta the sails on the old girl.
I think Pam and Connie are still laughing at the look on my face when Pam said "go forward" & Kath had to say your centre forward as we lined up at the centre line after the goal!
Well done girls - it was a good team effort for a late, cold night at PHS.
