Fremantle Cockburn Hockey Club is pleased to announce the launch of the Magpies All Abilities pilot program in February 2023. We are very excited about providing an opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to get involved in the fantastic sport of hockey and to be a part of ensuring people with disabilities have more choices when it comes to sport and being a part of a sporting club. Being involved in sport brings so many benefits in terms of physical and mental health, the chance to make new friends and learn new skills, opportunities which should be available to all of us.

The Magpies All Ability program is being developed and organised by a committee with extensive experience in supporting people with disability:

  • Christine Truscott - Chair of Cahoots for over 10 years, a charity providing recreational and outdoor adventure opportunities and camps for people with disability of all ages.
  • Delray Hill - over 7 years’ experience working with people with Autism and their families.
  • Monique Miller - Physio working in the disability sector working with kids with a range of disabilities (neurological, neuromuscular, physical, developmental delay etc).
  • Jayde Newman - Disability Support Worker for the last 4 years, supporting a diverse range of people to live independently and access the community. Jayde has also coached a number of hockey clinics for Cahoots and BlindSports WA, working with HockeyWA to adapt the game to make it accessible to everyone.
  • Tania Smith - current FCHC President with experience in the organisation and management of community sport.

This program is a pilot, and we will be working with participants and their families/ caregivers/ support workers to make changes as necessary to the program so that it best suits their needs. Our intent is to make our Magpies All Ability program a part of our club winter season and provide both a competitive and a non-competitive season for our members of differing abilities and interests, whether that be playing hockey, learning hockey or volunteering around the club. The final program will be dependent on the learnings from the pilot.
